Tarana Wheelwright, RMT

In early 2007  Tarana stumbled across the word doula and quickly realized she had discovered what it was that she wanted to be when she grew up!

Needing to make a career change, to support her desire to be a part of the birth process, she found the perfect compliment in Remedial Massage Therapy. Within a few weeks of her training as a remedial massage therapist, Tarana fell in love with the human body, it’s amazing structure and physiological functioning. What luck that the ‘back up’ career would turn into another equally loved form of ‘work’?!

After two years of intense study, and well over 2200 hours of both classroom study and hands on practical application, Tarana graduated from the Massage Therapy College of Manitoba (now Evolve) program with honours and a passion to be a part of restorative, therapeutic wellness. During the time she was studying at the college, Tarana continued her work as a doula, attending 25 births over those 2 years. This gave her a unique opportunity to see physiology in action!  This only served to deepen her trust in the body’s ability to function when supported in health.

Now she takes great delight in being able to be a part of the journey from pre-conception, to pregnancy, to birth and into the post natal years.  Whether she is active in all those stages, or just one or two, she considers this to be more privilege than work.

In 2014, Tarana took her first training in the Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapies. This training has served to deepen her appreciation for the magnitude of the body’s ability to restore and find balance with gentle facilitation. Indeed, “our issues are in our tissues”. After taking the initial training in Oregon, she traveled to Belize for a week long intensive training  which absolutely shifted and fine tuned the way she approaches the body both as a Massage Therapist and Doula.

Tarana has also taken training in teaching infant massage to primary Care providers, not only to support bonding between primary Care providers and their newborn children, but also to be a part of the movement towards proactive healthcare and wellness maintenance for the next generation. She has also had the opportunity to instruct Massage Therapists looking to add Doula support to their offerings.

She has also sought out learning Infant Craniosacral therapy from Carol Gray, in Oregon. And then later took a Workshop in Oral Function: Assessment and Comprehensive Care for the Pre-Crawling Infant, with Michelle Emmanuel & Melissa Cole. This served to deepen her understanding of the importance of oral function in regards to so much more than just feeding.

Craniosacral treatment is a gentle therapy form that can have long lasting benefits for infants and babies facing feeding challenges, along with a host of other common “baby’ issues.

Tarana offers infant treatments both at the Wellness Centre and in your home.  Contact her directly to arrange in home treatments.

Always the student, Tarana will continue to seek out comprehensive learning opportunities in subject matters close to her heart.

“Happiness comes of the capacity to feel deeply, to enjoy simply, to think freely, to risk life, to be needed” – Storm Jameson
